For twenty-years, he has helped miserable outsiders become happy and successful at Fortune 100 companies, fast-food joints and faith-based organizations. He has successfully coached executives and managers in career transition, life transition and overseas transition, and has counseled employees from senior executives at Shell Oil, Tokyo, to third-shift bottlers at a Miller Brewing plant in Los Angeles.
After completing a BA in Communication, Couper headed a revolutionary program to help 300 Japanese engineers at Japan Gasoline Corporation develop their communication and business skills in doing business abroad. He then worked for the BBC, developing educational programming for business people in partnership with the Japan Tourist Board. He also coached Japanese executives from private and government organizations, including Shell, Suntory and The New Energy Development Organization.
Returning to the UK, he completed postgraduate work in education and graduated from Project Author, one of the first programs in Europe in online training design. He then developed training programs for Rolls Royce, Halifax Bank, Ford Europe, the UK Post Office and British Telecom. A major success at that time was the design of a program for the Alliance & Leicester Building Society (a prestigious financial institution) that resulted in a 30% increase in sales.
Upon moving to the United States, Couper developed award-winning training and organizational development programs, as well as online education programs, for Arthur Andersen. One of Couper’s projects, which was used to mentor 20,000-plus employees, was awarded “Best Program in the U.S.†by TelCon.
Couper has worked one-on-one with more than 50 executives from Arco, The Gap and Nestle to deal with the culture shock that comes from being transferred to Asia, Australia, Europe and Latin America.
